About Windermere

The journey of Windermere estate as a plantation traces back to the early 1930s, entwined with the rich history of the Syrian Christian communities from central Travancore. Venturing into the lush High ranges during the reign of the Kingdom of Travancore, these pioneering planters established cardamom plantations beneath the protective canopy of towering trees, alongside their cherished homes. Spanning three generations, the estate was acquired in 1987 by Dr. Simon John, an ophthalmic surgeon in Kochi, drawn not only by the farming opportunity but also captivated by the breathtaking views from the quaint cottage.

Guided by the unwavering support of his in-laws, Annamma, and Capt. MK Mathew, the plantation flourished under their nurturing care. In a serendipitous turn of events, the opportunity to open the estate to guests emerged in 1997. Today, while renowned as a haven of hospitality, Windermere remains a fully operational plantation committed to cultivating the finest cardamom using responsible practices.
In addition, the estate proudly nurtures a small batch of distinctive Arabica Coffee. All our esteemed guests have the privilege of immersing themselves in the essence of the estate and savouring its bounty during their stay at Windermere. As we continue to uphold our farming traditions, we strive to embody the best agricultural practices, ensuring the sustainable production of cardamom while offering a unique experience to those who grace our estate.

The estate earned its name, Windermere, from a remarkable encounter with nature. It was the perceptive observation of the estate's first occupant. As the occupants’ and his visiting friends gazed out from the bungalow, they marvelled at the mesmerising panorama—the rolling clouds caressing the valley, embraced by majestic hills and mountains. The resemblance to the picturesque Lake District in the UK was undeniable, except for the absence of a lake, of course. Thus, the name Windermere was born, etching itself into the annals of the estate's legacy, an enduring tribute to its awe-inspiring surroundings.
